Smiley's Better Voice for Verity JE

Smiley's Better Voice is a separate Verity JE add-on for players who want more expressive text-to-speech, Fish Audio or Cartesia voices, and optional voice mimicking. Use this page when you searched for a better Verity voice, Fish Audio setup, Cartesia setup, a voice mimic feature, or a silent Better Voice install. It is not the default Verity Mod download, not a Bedrock add-on, not VERITY.exe, and not a file mirror. Start here to confirm Project ID 1608717, file record 8536538, the current file name, required parent mod, provider split, and safe troubleshooting order before opening any download page.

What the official project pages say

The goal is not to outrank official project pages by copying them. The useful job is to answer the searcher's confusion: which project is this, which file record is current, which parent mod is required, which provider key belongs where, and what to do when chat works but voice is silent.

Checked item Current fact Why it matters
Project identity Smiley's Better Voice by Toast5, CurseForge Project ID 1608717, 101,091 project downloads at check. This confirms a real add-on route, but it does not replace Verity JE or prove a Bedrock install path.
Current file Smiley's Better Voice-4.0.0.jar, file record 8536538, uploaded July 29, 2026, 1.41 MB, 2.8K file downloads, 1.20.1 Forge. Use the exact file page when a video, comment, or Discord message mentions Better Voice without a link.
Parent route Verity JE by VarmiteYT remains the parent Java project, with Project ID 1591438 on CurseForge. The 4.0.0 file changelog says Verity JE 6.0.0 is required for the current Better Voice file. Better Voice needs the matching parent route. If Verity JE does not load, reply to text, or match 6.0.0, fix the base route first.
Provider split Fish Audio is the default voice/emotion route; Cartesia is the faster pronunciation route. Fish, Cartesia, Groq, and Ollama keys solve different layers. A wrong key error may not be a Better Voice key.
Voice mimic The project describes private Fish voice mimics built from about 10 seconds of clean captured speech. Players should not post API keys, voice IDs, or private audio publicly while asking for help.

Use Better Voice when the installed Java route already works

Use it forTTS and mimic

Better voices after base Verity JE replies

This add-on is for sound quality, provider choice, emotion tags, and optional voice mimicking. The clean path is simple: install Verity JE correctly, confirm one typed prompt gets a reply, match Verity JE 6.0.0 for the current Better Voice 4.0.0 file, then add Better Voice and configure the provider tab. If a player has never seen Verity appear, cannot enter a world, or sees an API connection failed message before audio starts, the first stop is the Java, provider, or not-working route rather than this add-on.

Bedrock, MCPE, and VERITY.exe are separate

A JAR add-on does not import into Minecraft Bedrock or MCPE. Bedrock users should use Verity BE, PnTMC, or Pocket Edition pages. VERITY.exe players should keep the modpack profile and debug voice chat, direct chat, and Groq setup inside that profile. Installing Better Voice because a Bedrock world is silent will only create another mismatch.

Use the project page instead of copied JARs

File names can be copied. The useful identifiers are Project ID 1608717, file record 8536538, owner Toast5, and the official CurseForge URL. This site publishes route data and a source pack so support helpers can cite facts without uploading a replacement JAR or asking players for private keys.

Setup order

Install and test in layers

Layer one: parent mod and loader

Start with a clean Java profile. For the current Better Voice file, the checked route is Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge. The current file changelog says Better Voice 4.0.0 adds support for Verity JE 6.0.0 and is incompatible with earlier Verity JE versions. The broader project table may still show older requirement wording, so treat the exact file page as the current compatibility source. Add only the needed parent mod and dependencies first. Launch the profile and confirm the game opens before adding extra horror packs, server-side utilities, visual mods, or provider experiments. This protects you from diagnosing a sound issue when the real issue is a loader, dependency, or version mismatch.

After the parent Verity JE route loads, test one short typed prompt. If the text response fails, check Groq, Ollama, OpenRouter, status 401, status 429, local server state, or model behavior. If the text response works but voice does not, Better Voice, Minecraft audio, TTS provider, voice ID, internet access, or provider credits become the likely layer.

Layer two: Fish Audio

Fish Audio is the quality and emotion path. It uses its own API key and a voice or reference ID. Voice mimicking also belongs to this side. If the mimic fails, the checked project notes point to common causes such as invalid Fish key, insufficient credits, or not enough clean push-to-talk speech. Do not post the Fish key, the full voice ID, or a private audio sample when asking for help.

Layer three: Cartesia

Cartesia is the speed and pronunciation path. It has its own API key and Voice ID in a separate config tab. If a player changes providers and Verity becomes silent, confirm that the provider was actually switched, the right tab has a key and voice ID, Minecraft is online, and the account has access to the selected voice. Do not reuse a Groq key in a Cartesia field.

Layer four: audio output

When chat works and provider settings look right, check ordinary output. Raise Minecraft master volume, voice or sound sliders, operating-system output, headset routing, resource packs, and server/client parity. If the player is on a server, confirm the add-on and dependencies are present where the feature expects them. A working text response means the problem may be after the AI layer.

Silent voice fix

What to check when Better Voice is installed but Verity is quiet

Symptom Likely layer First useful action
Text appears in chat but no voice plays TTS provider, Minecraft audio, Better Voice toggle, Verity JE TTS toggle, output device Confirm Better Voice is enabled, Better Voice 4.0.0 is paired with Verity JE 6.0.0, Use text to speech is on, provider key plus voice ID are filled, and a short line is tested online.
Better Voice 4.0.0 is installed beside Verity JE 5.x or earlier Parent mod and add-on version mismatch Use Verity JE 6.0.0 for Better Voice 4.0.0, or intentionally choose an older Better Voice file that matches the older parent route.
"Invalid API Key" appears when talking Could be Groq/Ollama in Verity JE rather than Fish or Cartesia Identify which config tab produced the error before replacing the Better Voice file.
Voice mimic does not work Fish key, credits, captured speech quality, or server-stored mimic state Use about 10 seconds of clean push-to-talk speech and check Fish account status without posting private audio.
Throw scream repeats after landing Old Better Voice or old parent mod behavior Compare installed versions with current Better Voice 4.0.0, Verity JE 6.0.0, and the file changelog.
Bedrock world has no TTS Wrong edition Use the Verity BE or PnTMC Bedrock page instead. Do not import a Java JAR into Bedrock.

Key and voice safety

Do not expose provider secrets while asking for help

Useful support summaries avoid private data

A good Better Voice support message should name the route, Minecraft version, loader, parent Verity JE version, Better Voice file record, selected provider, whether typed text works, and the exact non-secret error text. It should not include a Fish API key, Cartesia API key, Groq key, Ollama endpoint credential, OpenRouter key, full voice ID, session token, or private audio sample. If a helper asks for a full key in public, stop and move to a safer support channel.

Voice mimicking deserves extra care because it can involve captured speech. The checked project page describes Fish-based mimics as private to the player's Fish account and stored server-side for multiplayer. That is not a reason to panic, but it is a reason to avoid public uploads of voice samples, log files containing account data, or screenshots that show provider dashboards.

Copy this safe support outline

  • Project: Verity JE plus Smiley's Better Voice.
  • File: Better Voice record 8536538 or another exact record.
  • Minecraft and loader: for example 1.20.1 Forge.
  • Parent version: Verity JE 6.0.0 for current Better Voice 4.0.0, or the exact older match.
  • Provider: Fish Audio or Cartesia, without the key.
  • Text test: whether Verity JE replies in chat before voice.
  • Audio test: whether any Minecraft sounds and other TTS output work.
  • Error: sanitized toast or log line with secrets removed.
